Linkin Park – Living Things

June 26, 2012 3 Comments

Opened up Spotify to listen to some tracks while leveling my Witch Doctor on D3 and to my surprise the new Linkin Park record was out. Started listening to it straightaway and was pleasantly surprised. I didn’t really get into the previous two records but this one seems really good. Here’s some track by track thoughts.

1. Lost In The Echo (3:25)
Solid start that had me hooked within 10 seconds. I really like the overall melody that they have going on here and the chorus is filled with catchy lyrics that I started singing out loud on 2nd listen. A lot of it actually REALLY reminds me of the songs from Hybrid Theory, which in my book is a huuuuge plus. Love me some Hybrid Theory! And these promises broken… didi dumdum, awesome.

2. In My Remains (3:21)
The song starts out with more of a recent LP vibe like New Divide, but I prefer the melody on this one to the others like it from the previous two records. Not quite as catchy as the first tune, but I like the clean vocals towards the end of the song. Like an army, falling, one by one by one. Great song, but not quite on par with the first one.

3. Burn It Down (3:50)
Third straight song that I starred on Spotify on my first playthrough. Judging by the “top hits”, this is the single song from the record but I hadn’t heard it before since I don’t listen to the radio. Solid radio material no doubt. Catchy rhythm that makes your foot move, but definitely not the strongest song from the record.

4. Lies Greed Misery (2:26)
Not my kind of tune. It didn’t really do anything for me. Sort of an interlude and it seems most of the LP albums have short interlude songs like this one. Definitely skipping this every time.

5. I’ll Be Gone (3:31)
The song that made me raise the volume to max. Probably my favorite off the whole record after two playthroughs. Absolutely love Chesters clean vocals before the chorus and also the more aggressive chorus side. The melody of this song has this little melancholy minor sound going on which I really gravitate towards. Safe to say this and “In My Remains” will be the first two songs I’ll completely rape through during the next few days.

6. Castle of Glass (3:25)
I’m fairly sure Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda both sing the verse parts. I like the sound of them both singing at the same time and it’s clearly the main hook in this song and you know what, it works for me! Other than the singing the music is okay but nothing special.

7. Victimized (1:46)
One of these aggressive chaotic semirap songs from LP. Doesn’t really do it for me but then again this is another one of these two minute long interlude pieces so not a whole lot to say.

8. Roads Untraveled (3:50)
Piano and vocals is a combination I usually can’t say no to and this is no exception. Good change of pace and there’s a more relaxing sound to this whole song. Beautiful lyrics and I really like the song. One of the best on Living Things.

9. Skin To Bone (2:48)
Ash to ashes, dust to dust. That alone made it hard for me not to think about Metallica during this song. The song doesn’t really go anywhere. It’s definitely not a bad song in my books, but it just doesn’t really do it to me in any level. Pretty much a definite description of a “background song” – it’s there and I don’t really care either way.

10. Until It Breaks (3:43)
More of Mike Shinoda and his rapping. I don’t blatantly hate anything about this song, but I can’t say I like it either. Kind of a weak song that showcases the side of Linkin Park I can’t get into, which is a lot of what the previous two albums were.

11. Tinfoil (1:12)
Tinfoil in just over a minute works as a prelude to the last song on the album, Powerless. Might as well have been a part of Powerless but it doesn’t really matter.

12. Powerless (3:44)
Thankfully they end the album in a positive note. Powerless is basically a ballady type song but works great nonetheless. Good song to end on and I would at the very least rate it amongst the top half.

Overall I’m really positively surprised by Living Things. I can hear some of the Hybrid Theory vibe coming through which I haven’t really hard since maybe Meteora. I wasn’t really waiting for it even though I remember reading that a new Linkin Park record should be coming out during the summer. I’ve been struggling to find some new music to listen to lately so I’m very happy and excited to see some new stuff come out.

I’m off to make a playlist of the better songs and repeat-rape it through until I can’t bare it anylonger :p
